Players who are disconnected from Marathon will receive an error message that may contain an error code at the bottom. Each error code indicates a different type of disconnection and is used to help Bungie, platform partners, and players track what is causing impacted players to lose connectivity with the game.
Service Status
Before players begin troubleshooting, it may be helpful to check for known service outages that may be affecting their ability to connect:
Types of Error Codes
Most error messages that players may encounter while playing Marathon will fall into one of two categories of error codes: Platform Error Codes or Marathon Error Codes. The type of error code that a player is encountering will determine the best source of support and troubleshooting steps.
Platform Error Codes
Players may occasionally encounter a platform error code when playing Marathon or during the installation process. These are most often a string of numbers and/or letters. To troubleshoot these errors, please contact the proper platform support site:
Marathon Error Codes
Players may occasionally encounter a Marathon error code when playing Marathon or during the installation process. These are most often a single English word for an animal, plant, or musical instrument, such as WEASEL, MARIONBERRY, or BANJO.
Some error codes provide unique troubleshooting steps and can be searched for here.
Please see below for basic steps to troubleshoot Marathon Error Codes.
Basic Troubleshooting Steps
The basic steps for troubleshooting a Marathon Error Code are dependent on the types and frequency of the Error Code that is being encountered.
Players who have received a single disconnect from an error code should close and restart the Marathon application on their platform. If players continue to encounter error codes after restarting Marathon, they should follow the troubleshooting steps in the sections below.
Receiving the same error codes multiple times indicates that a player is likely encountering a single root issue. The cause of the disconnects could be something such as corrupted data in the Marathon installation or a source of instability in the player's network setup.
Players who are receiving multiple disconnections from Marathon with the same error codes may want to try the following troubleshooting steps:
- Closing and restarting the Marathon application on their platform
- Restarting and clearing the cache of their platform
- Switching to a wired connection if the player is currently using a WiFi connection
- Searching the Marathon Help Knowledge Base for the associated error page and working through any additional troubleshooting suggested on the page
- Reading through the other pages of the Network Troubleshooting Guide
- Searching or posting in the Help forum, where Player Support, Mentors, and community volunteers may be able to provide additional assistance
Receiving multiple disconnects with several different error codes indicates that a player is encountering an issue that Bungie cannot pin down to a single root cause. This is frequently caused by instability in a player's network setup, especially WiFi networks or networks encountering upstream traffic issues.
Players who are receiving multiple disconnections from Marathon with different error codes may want to try the following troubleshooting steps:
- Closing and restarting the Marathon application on their platform
- Restarting and clearing the cache of their platform
- Power cycling their network hardware
- Switching to a wired connection if the player is currently using a WiFi connection
- Contacting their Internet Service Provider to troubleshoot potential issues with network traffic, stability, or packet loss
When troubleshooting and investigating potential causes of multiple disconnects, it may be helpful to take note of any patterns in the frequency, timing, or context of the disconnects.
- For example, if a player receives the same error code every time a new WiFi device connects to their network, this may indicate an issue with the strength and stability of their WiFi network setup.
