Marathon Cross Play Guide

Cross Play is a feature in Marathon that allows players to form Crews and fight against other players across all supported platforms.

Please take a look below for information on what is included in Marathon's Cross Play feature.

Cross Save

In tandem with Cross Play, Cross Save enables players to use their Marathon shells, progress, and gear across any platform linked to their Bungie Profile.

Players with linked platform accounts will always have one set of Marathon shells, while those with separate accounts will have to choose which account to keep if linking the accounts to their Bungie Profile.

More Information

Bungie Name

A Bungie Name is a player's identity used across Bungie's games, websites, and services, and is a part of Cross Play for Marathon.

Upon launching the game, new players will be generated a unique Bungie Name based on their platform account name.

Through Cross Play, players can search for others on the Runner Connections screen using their Bungie Name to join their Crew, add them as a Bungie Friend, or both.

    • If you leave a Crew during a run before the run completes, this list will not update.
    • If you exfil before your Crew does, this list will update after the run completes.
  4. INVITES – Find friends via player search and manage any Runner Connections invites.
    • Search by a player's Bungie Name to send them an invite, join their Crew, or send them a Bungie Friend request.
    • Bungie Name's requires a player's display name (e.g., PlayerName), a hash sign (i.e., #), and their numeric ID (e.g., 1234). Example: PlayerName#1234
    • For players on Xbox consoles, invites function differently depending on whether cross-network play is allowed or blocked on the platform or Microsoft account. Visit Xbox Support's article for more information.
      • If cross-network play is allowed, in-game invites will be received across all platforms.
        • Unless the in-game Cross Play preference setting is set to Console Only.
      • If cross-network play is blocked, in-game invites will not be received from anyone not on Xbox.
    • For players on PlayStation consoles, invites will function differently depending on the in-game Cross Play setting.
      • If Cross Play is set to opt in, in-game invites will be received across all platforms.

      • If Cross Play is set to opt out, in-game invites will not be received from anyone not on PlayStation.
  5. RANKED LEVEL – Connections sorted by players' Ranked Level.

Bungie Friends

With Cross Play, players have a Bungie Friends list they can access across all their linked platforms and Bungie games.

Players can add Bungie Friends by:

  • Searching for a player's Bungie Name in the Runner Connections Invites tab
  • Sending a request to a crewmate
  • Sending a request via a player's Bungie.net Profile
  • Importing platform friends in your Bungie.net Profile Settings

Players can have up to 200 Bungie Friends at a time.

Managing Friend Requests

Players can manage pending Bungie Friend requests from the Invites tab. Bungie Friend requests can also be managed directly from players' Bungie.net Profile Settings.

Settings and Safety

In Marathon's Settings under the Social tab, players can manage their Bungie Friend Requests settings to determine who can send them requests, with options being Public or Closed.

Blocking Players

Players can block others from contacting them by inspecting them in-game while on a run or in the Runner Connections area. Blocking a player will prevent them from sending you friend requests and invites, and block them from contacting you through voice and text chat. However, it will still be possible to match with them on a run.

Players on the blocking player's Bungie Friends list will be automatically removed from their Bungie Friends list when blocked. The Blocked Users List can be managed on Bungie.net within a player's Profile Settings.

Matchmaking

Cross Play matchmaking may vary depending on the queue, zone, and player or platform settings. Cross Play is automatically enabled, and all players* can matchmake with others across each supported platform.

To utilize Marathon's matchmaking, players can fill up their Crew (or go solo) and launch into a zone.

*Note: PlayStation and Xbox players who have turned off or selected a Console Only option for Cross Play in their in-game, account, or platform settings may have a more limited experience with matchmaking, such as longer queue times.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

Troubleshooting

Marathon account not appearing on other platforms

Players encountering issues locating their account on other platforms are recommended to try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Exit the game, quit the app, restart your platform, then log back in to Marathon to see if anything changes.
  • Log out of the game and head to Bungie.net. Log in, go to your Profile Settings, then click the Account Linking button, confirm that the platform account you're attempting to play on is the same one linked to your Profile, and then log back in.
    • Platform accounts must be linked to the same Bungie.net Profile for a Marathon account to be accessed on those platforms. To link an account to a Bungie Profile, please visit our Bungie.net Account Creation and Linking Guide for more information.

Unable to join other players or Bungie Friends

Players having issues joining other players through invites or a friend's open Crew slot are most likely having a connection issue and are recommended to restart the Marathon app to see if they still encounter the issue.

If players continue encountering the issue, they are recommended to check if they are receiving an error message and follow the directions stated within.

Players still encountering issues should review our Network Troubleshooting Guide for common connection issues and troubleshooting steps, and our Advanced Steps Networking Guide, which provides information about NAT types inside a modem, how to change them, and using Port Forwarding to open specific connections for Marathon.
