Xbox crashing/overheating

Soon as marathon game loads, xbox fan begins running loud. Xbox acts like it is overheating causing game client to crash or shut down entire xbox. Console has been cleaned of dust and doesn't happen with other games. Fan immediately goes silent when closing game. Wondering if its a weird issue with marathon game data. Started happening after patch on April 29, 2026.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the report.

If you are still experiencing crashing and overheating, can you please try the following:

    • Completely power down your console, wait ~30 seconds, then start it back up.
    • Check for and install any system updates
    • Reinstall Marathon and Clear your console's cache (Please check out this guide)

Also, please make sure your console has good ventilation. Overheating can trigger safety shutdowns that look like random crashes.

  • Hi Bungie,
I have tried this and still have the issue.

  • Hi again,

If the console is still getting hot enough to shut itself down only while playing Marathon, please send us a bit more information so we can investigate:

    • Your Xbox model (Series X or Series S)

    • Whether the shut down happens in menus, in‑match, or both

    • Roughly how long after launching it occurs

    • Any error codes or messages shown on-screen or in your Xbox error history that occurred when playing Marathon (for example, codes starting with 0x...)

    • If possible, a short video clip showing what happens leading up to the crash/shutdown (you can capture this with a phone pointed at the screen if needed). You can upload the footage to a public video hosting site, like YouTube, then post the link here.

  • Xbox series x.
Console is still cool to the touch just the fan goes crazy.
No error code just screen goes black and either the client closes but more often the xbox just shuts down.
Xbox does say it shuts down due to over heating but again it does not feel hot at all.
Issue happens almost immediately after entering menus when starting game client. Was able to do one match once but no more.

    Thank you for responding.

  • Hi there,

    Thanks for those details..

Here are a few additional things to try:

    • Check your console placement and airflow

      • Make sure your Xbox is in a completely open area (not inside a cabinet or tight shelf).
      • Leave several inches of space on all sides, especially the top exhaust.
      • If possible, try one session with the console pulled out into the open and see if it still shuts down.

    • Confirm your install location

      • On your Xbox Home, go to My games & apps → See all → highlight Marathon → Manage game and add-ons.
      • Make sure Marathon is installed on the internal storage. If it’s on an external drive, move it to internal and test again.

    • Reduce the rendering load

      • Go to Settings → General → TV & display options:
        • Set Resolution to 1080p.
        • Turn Off 120Hz, VRR, and Dolby Vision for Gaming (if enabled).
        • Under Video fidelity & overscan, use 8-bit color.
      • Fully quit and relaunch Marathon, then see if the shutdown still happens.

    • Disable Quick Resume

      • From the dashboard, highlight Marathon, press the Menu (⋯) button, and select Quit.
      • Go to Settings → General → Power options and set it to Energy saver (this disables Quick Resume).
      • Then do a full shutdown and restart: press and hold the Xbox power button on the console for ~10 seconds, wait 30 seconds, power it back on, and launch Marathon again.

    • Close background apps

      • In My games & apps, make sure no other games or apps are running in the background (highlight any running app → Menu → Quit).

    • Grab error details from the console if it still shuts down:

      • Go to Settings → System → Console info → Error history.
      • Take a screenshot or note any entries that match the time of the crash (error codes and descriptions), and your OS version and console model (Xbox Series X).
      • Include this info, plus roughly what you were doing and how long you’d been in the game when the shutdown happens, in your next reply.

Because the entire console is shutting down and showing an overheating message, this is also something we recommend raising directly with Xbox Support so they can double-check for any hardware or firmware issues, even if the console doesn’t feel hot to the touch.
