Open your Bungie Friends list and remove a few Bungie friends to make sure you have open space. Bungie Friends are shared across Marathon and Destiny, and the list can cap at 200 players.
While you're there, check whether you have any outgoing Bungie friend requests still pending.
After that, try accepting the friend request again on Bungie.net first, then check Marathon.
If it still does not work after making space, please send us:

A screenshot or video of your Bungie Friends page on Bungie.net
Confirmation whether the same issue also happens in Destiny 2, if you have access to it

You or the other player are probably at max friends ingame, for some reason there is a 40-50 person cap
