RTX 4050 Laptop GPU - 5-10% GPU Usage, Kicked for Low Frames in Fullscreen
Hello,
I am experiencing a severe performance issue in Marathon that I have been unable to fix after extensive troubleshooting.
My PC Specs:
- CPU: Intel Core i7-14700HX
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU (6GB VRAM)
- RAM: 16GB DDR5
- OS: Windows 11 64-bit
- NVIDIA Driver: 32.0.16.1 (dated 5/19/2026)
The Issue:
When playing Marathon, my GPU usage stays at only 5-10% according to Windows Task Manager, even during active gameplay. The game runs extremely poorly in fullscreen mode and I get kicked from matches due to frames being too low. The game only runs acceptably when I press the Windows key and unfocus it, or when it is in windowed mode.
VRAM usage hits 3.6-3.7 out of 6.0GB just on the loading screen, before entering a match.
What I have already tried:
- Set display mode to Borderless Windowed via cvars config file
- Set NVIDIA Power Management to Prefer Maximum Performance
- Forced game to use RTX 4050 via Windows Graphics Settings
- Disabled fullscreen optimizations on Marathon.exe
- Set VSync to Fast via NVIDIA Control Panel
- Disabled Auto HDR
- Lowered render resolution and graphics settings in cvars
- Verified integrity of game files via Steam
- Cleared NVIDIA shader cache
- Forced DirectX 11 via -dx11 launch option
- Used -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -high launch options
- Clean PC restart with no background apps
None of these steps resolved the issue. The GPU utilization remains critically low and the game is unplayable in fullscreen. This appears to be a known issue with RTX 4050 Laptop GPUs based on other community reports.
Please investigate and provide a fix or patch.
Thank you.

Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out.
While it may be possible to play on certain laptop configurations, we do not officially support them per our Marathon Storage and System Requirements guide.
Because this is an unsupported platform, we’re only able to suggest basic troubleshooting steps here and can’t provide more advanced troubleshooting.
That being said, here are some steps to try:
so are laptops basically unsupported?
My 4050 laptop runs Marathon fine, so it's weird that they're not supporting it. You said that you tried forcing it to use the 4050 from Windows settings, but sometimes I've found that I need to force it from the Nvidia Control Panel.
I hope you're able to figure it out!
is there something that you have done?
