Game crashes after 1-2 mins in lobby (Every time)

Bungie Account Name: [Hustle#9454]
Platform: Steam (PC, Windows 11)
Description of Issue: The game crashes to desktop after 2-3 minutes of being afk in lobby, When im trying to get into the game it crashes faster (from 1 minute to 2 minute). This started maybe 2 weeks ago and happens consistently. Any change of settings or reinstalls and other things like this does not help.
Repro steps:

  1. Launch Marathon through Steam.

  2. Sit in lobby or tryna go to run

  3. Last it for 1-2 mins

  4. Game crashes to desktop without an error message.

    Hello there,

Thank you very much for reaching out to us.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with the game crashing when trying to play the game.

To start out, we'd recommend trying to verify the game file integrity through steam to see if it helps. If the issue persists, please ensure that all of your drivers, windows, and your BIOS are all fully up-to-date. Lastly, if those two steps don't help, please try uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Please go through this guide to reinstall Marathon.

If you still run into the same issue despite all of this, can you provide us with a copy of your DxDiag? You can copy and paste it over on PasteBin and provide us with the link.

  • Ah and also my specs are:

    rtx 4070s

  • Hi there,

    Thanks for the DxDiag.

To try to stabilize things and narrow down the cause, please go through these steps in order:

    1. Windows / OS

      • Make sure Windows is fully updated via Settings → Windows Update.
      • If possible, switch from the current Insider/preview build back to a public release build of Windows 11 (for example 23H2). We can’t guarantee stability on Insider builds and they’re outside what we officially support. These pre-release builds are more experimental and can cause stability problems, especially with games and anti-cheat.
    2. Clean-reinstall your NVIDIA driver

      • Download the latest WHQL Game Ready driver for your RTX 4070 SUPER from NVIDIA’s site.
      • Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode to remove the current NVIDIA driver.
      • Reboot and install the downloaded driver with a clean installation option.
      • Test Marathon again after this.
    3. Disable overlays and virtual devices (test with a “clean” environment) For a test run, before launching Marathon:

      • Fully close:
        • SteelSeries GG / Sonar virtual devices
        • Voicemod / “Voice Changer Virtual Audio Device”
        • MFDriver Virtual Audio
        • Animaze Virtual Camera, MirrorTo Virtual Camera, OBS Virtual Camera
        • Any other RGB, monitoring, or in-game overlays (Discord overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, MSI Afterburner / RivaTuner, etc. if installed)
      • In Sound Settings, set your Logitech headset as the default playback and recording device and disable other unused playback/capture devices for now.
      • If you have any Tencent-related launchers installed (processes named tbs_browser.exe or “Tencent Browsing Service”), fully close them before starting Marathon.

Then launch Steam and Marathon and see if the crash still happens in the lobby.

    4. In-game and display settings

      • In Windows, turn HDR/advanced color off for your monitor.
      • In-game, for testing:
        • Use Windowed Fullscreen.
        • Turn off upscalers (DLSS/FSR/XeSS) and limit the frame rate to something moderate (e.g. 60–90).
        • Avoid alt-tabbing repeatedly for the test session.
    5. System health checks

      • Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
        • sfc /scannow
        • then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
      • If you continue to see Blue Screens while playing other games or on the desktop, we strongly recommend:
        • Testing your RAM
        • Disabling any CPU/GPU overclocks
        • Working with a local technician or Microsoft Support, since repeated bugchecks point to a deeper OS/driver/hardware issue.
