FPS sometimes gets stuck under 25 when in Fullscreen

When running the game in Fullscreen, sometimes the FPS will drop from the average of 80-90 to below 25 (usually 23) and get stuck there. This can happen randomly in the middle of a run or can be triggered manually by just Alt+Tabbing and coming back to the game. This happens to me only in this game. All the thermals are in order (no thermal throttling). GPU drivers, Chipset drivers, and BIOS are up to date.

When the game gets stuck below 25 FPS, the only couple of ways apart from restarting it that I have found are:
- changing anything in the graphics settings (ex: render resolution)
- pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and coming back to the game
- pressing Ctrl+Shitf+Windows+B (graphics driver reset)
- pressing Alt+Enter twice to switch to Windowed mode and back to Fullscreen mode

These fixes always work (except for changing the graphics settings, which sometimes does not), but they are not a permanent fix, as the game will then get stuck under 25 FPS again some time later (usually in 5-10 minutes). The more a single instance of Marathon is running, the more frequently this bugs tends to occur. Ironically, when another window is selected, the game will run at a stable 30 FPS, but then will drop below 25 FPS when selected.

The only way for me to fully avoid this from happening is to run the game in Windowed mode (I tried triggering this bug in Windowed mode, but it never happens). However, then the game tends to run slightly worse (about 5-10 FPS lower) and the top portion of the screen is covered.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for reaching out.

While it may be possible to play on certain laptop configurations, we do not officially support them per our Marathon Storage and System Requirements guide.

Because this is an unsupported platform, we’re only able to suggest basic troubleshooting steps here and can’t provide more advanced troubleshooting.

That being said, here are some steps to try:

    • Update your GPU drivers to the latest version from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
    • Make sure the game is using the laptop’s dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
    • Set Windows and your GPU control panel to High Performance mode for Marathon.
    • Disable overlays and background tools such as Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and similar software.
    • Remove any overclock, undervolt, or third-party performance tuning settings and test again at default settings.
    • Fully restart the PC after driver updates, reinstalling, or verifying files.
    • Make sure Windows is fully updated.

If you haven't already, we would also recommend checking out our PC Performance guide.

  • I have tried every single thing suggested there and none of them work. This is the only game that has this bug of my system.

Is it possible to pass this on to developers for review?
