Mouse lag makes game unplayable

The mouse input is so slow that my shell continues moving with hands off the mouse and keyboard.

Some motions continue indefinitely; e.g. I get stuck looking at my feet, or continue to turn in a circle. The input lag is so bad in the menus for the game, I can click a button, leave the room, and re-enter the room to watch the action complete.

When I drop input down to 125 Hz, I can move without the input continuing with my hands off the mouse as much, but it still occurs. The game is not playable in this state, but at least I can walking sim.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game, updated all of my network settings and triple-checked them with the Network Troubleshooting Guide. I have followed the steps outlined in this thread. I have tried 5 different mice, plus 1 of the same brand.  I have updated my graphics driver, re-set and experimented with dropping the graphics settings for good measure.

I paid $60 for this game, and it is the only one in my Steam library with these issues.

I, a customer, should not have to set my mouse polling rate to Office Mouse (125) to attempt to play Sasme Marsh, Less Lighting Marathon with the UI quality that would embarrass a college game developer, then set it back to Gaming Mouse (500 to 100+) when I want to play a game that functions as advertised.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the report.

This sounds like it could be caused by a background app conflicting with the game, especially overlays, capture tools, or window-management software.

    Please try the following:

    • Close Marathon completely.
    • Disable the Steam Overlay.
    • Fully close Discord, or disable Discord overlay and clipping features.
    • If you are streaming, use full-screen or display capture instead of game-window capture.
    • Disable capture tools or similar background recording apps.
    • Relaunch Marathon and test before reopening other apps.
    • If needed, lower your mouse polling rate to 250 Hz or 125 Hz as a temporary workaround.

If this helps, one of those background apps is likely the cause.

If it does not help, please share whether you had Discord, Steam Overlay, or any other capture or overlay tools running in the background.

  • I have disabled the Steam overlay, Discord overlay, XBox Game Bar overlay, have run and tested the game with Discord closed after a restart, and a restart after all overlays were closed.

I gave up on streaming anything in March, with the forum advice being "disable streaming software and capture software to resolve game problems".

    As mentioned in my post:

I stepped down to 500, 250, then 125 Hz. The input lag is still so bad at 125 Hz that "Mouse lag makes game unplayable"

I appreciate the reply, but this is a game I paid $60 to support on release day, and your reply to me being "try this step you already tried" is making me regret my purchase even more.
