Game freezes on launch
I can't seem to launch Marathon past this loading screen anymore. No other game has issues. I played a few days ago with no issue. I disabled all overlays and screen recording software. I have no ASUS programs running and here's my DXDiag. PC is fully up to date with all Windows updates and Nvidia/AMD. Reinstalled Batteye as well.

Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out. We appreciate all the details, and trying to troubleshoot.
Here's a few more other things you can try to solve this issue.
Your DxDiag shows several virtual/USB audio devices (Voicemeeter/VB-Audio, multiple outputs, etc.). For a test, please temporarily disable virtual/extra audio devices (Voicemeeter / VB‑Audio / extra “cable” inputs/outputs) and set a simple default output (your main speakers or headphones), then reboot and relaunch.
Run Steam as administrator and try launching Marathon again.
Temporarily disable any third‑party antivirus or firewall (leaving Windows Defender on is fine) and try another launch.
If the issue persists, please let us know.
Also cleared the Steam cache, currently reinstalling the game to see if this fixes it.
update: uninstalling and reinstalling loaded 2 more seconds lol but that's it.
Right-click Marathon in your Steam Library > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Let this complete and then try launching again.
Then you could try to reinstall BattlEye
Fully close Steam.
Go to your Marathon installation folder and look for the BattleEye subfolder.
Run the BattleEye installer there (or the “Install/Repair BattleEye” option if available).
Relaunch Steam as administrator (right‑click Steam > Run as administrator) and then try starting the game.
After that, you can try to disable overlays and background apps
Turn off overlays like Steam Overlay, Discord overlay, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner/Rivatuner, etc.
Close any unnecessary background apps (especially screen recorders, performance overlays, or other anti‑cheat tools).
Try launching again.
Lastly, check and update Windows and GPU software
Make sure Windows is fully updated (including optional updates related to .NET/Visual C++ if offered).
If you use software like ASUS Armoury Crate, RGB/OC tools, or other GPU tuning apps, try temporarily closing or disabling them before launching.
Completed this entire recommendation from another post, and still nothing.
can't believe this worked.
Fix: Defaulted to speakers/headset direct audio - restarted - opened steam as admin - disabled all programs - launched game (worked)
(Re-enabled Voicemeeter once the game was launched and restarted, and the game is fine now.)
Hi there,
Thanks for the follow‑up, and I’m glad to hear you were able to get Marathon launching again after switching to your direct speakers/headset output and adjusting those background apps. We really appreciate you sharing the exact steps you took. This kind of detail is extremely helpful for other players who might run into the same issue.
If you notice the problem returning or run into anything else while playing, please let us know and we’ll be happy to take another look.
