Can't get past the login screen unless with vpn

  • Bungie Account Name - Tactical Buttcheeks#8670
  • Platform - Steam
  • Description of Issue - For various reasons I sometimes have a VPN on while using my pc. Yesterday I left it on while starting up Marathon and played a few rounds of Rook before a friend asked to join up. I noticed the vpn was on and, fearing ping differences between us, I closed the game, turned it off, and opened the game back up. From there on, the game just wouldn't connect. Restart game, restart steam, restart router, restart computer. Since then I am only allowed to connect if utilizing a VPN
  • Rough Date and Time of issue - march 3, roughly 2pm est - ongoing
  • Repro steps - have vpn on -> Alt +f4 the game -> turn off vpn -> spin the game up -> infinite signing in

It would be really cool to be allowed to play without a vpn again

    Hi there,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Could you try the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Fully close Marathon and Steam.
    • Power-cycle your modem and router (unplug for 30–60 seconds, then plug back in).
    • After the internet is back, reboot your PC.
    • Launch Steam → Marathon (with no VPN) and wait a couple of minutes at “Signing in…”.
    • Flush DNS and reset network stack

      • In Windows, open Command Prompt as Administrator and run, one by one:
        • ipconfig /flushdns
        • netsh int ip reset
        • netsh winsock reset
      • Reboot the PC, then try Marathon again without your VPN.
    • Change DNS away from ISP defaults

      • Windows Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced network settings → More network adapter options.
      • Right-click your active connection → Properties → Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) → Properties.
      • Set DNS to Manual and use, for example:
        • Preferred: 8.8.8.8
        • Alternate: 1.1.1.1
      • OK → reboot → try Marathon again with your VPN off.
    • Temporarily disable extra filters

      • Turn off any third-party firewall, antivirus, or router-level security features.
      • Make sure no router-side VPN / DNS filter is still active even when your PC VPN app is off.

If this doesn't work, please share:

    • Your region and ISP name
    • A list of recent attempt times without VPN on (date, time, and time zone) where it hung on “Signing in…”
  • Looks like dns flush and resets worked! Thank you! Saving this for possible future incidents
