Marathon Not Recognizing Controller on PC

Hello! I have been having issues with getting my controller to work within Marathon. I play many games with controller on my PC Via steam with no issue. The EXACT issue I'm seeing is when launching Marathon and I can enter the game by pressing "A" on my controller, which is an Xbox Controller. Once in it shows that I can use X and the bumpers, but once I try to use the stick or do any input nothing is recognized and I have to use MnK. I can play MnK but it is just not my preferred method.  I always troubleshoot to try to narrow down the issue. So far I have tested:

-Different Controllers (results in same issue)

-Different games- Controller has no issue working on literally any other game I have tested which would be Destiny2, Battlefield 6, Fortnite, Resident Evil 9.

-Different USB ports on PC- This makes no difference, but I have also tried Bluetooth which still does not make a difference in connectivity.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide that I may have overlooked.

Thank you!

    Hi there,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Sorry to hear that your controller isn't working on PC. Can you try the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Toggle Steam Input for Marathon

      • In Steam, go to Library → Marathon → Manage (gear) → Controller.
      • Set Override for Marathon to Disable Steam Input then restart the game.
      • If it was already off, try Enable Steam Input instead and retry.
    • Fully restart with only your controller, keyboard and mouse attached

      • Quit Marathon and Steam completely.
      • Unplug any extra input devices (other gamepads, HOTAS/wheels, special keypads).
      • Plug in the Xbox controller by USB first (no Bluetooth), then relaunch Steam and Marathon.
    • Check in-game input selection

      • From the Settings → Controls menu, make sure the game is actually detecting controller input.
      • If you've customized any bindings, reset controller bindings to default once, apply, then test the controller again.
    • Update controller firmware in the Xbox Accessories app on Windows.

    • Turn off overlays / capture tools

      • Temporarily disable the Steam Overlay for Marathon (Steam → Settings → In-Game → uncheck “Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game”).
      • Temporarily close Discord or at least disable its in-game overlay / always-on clipping, and any other capture utilities (Nvidia overlay, OBS game capture, etc.), then restart Marathon.

If none of these fix the issue, please let me know the following:

    • Your controller model and whether you’re using it wired or with bluetooth.
    • Are you running any input-remap tools? (reWASD, DS4Windows, etc.)
    • Is your controller firmware updated?
    • A short video showing:
      • You pressing A on the controller to get past the title screen,
      • The controller button prompts visible on screen,
      • Then the sticks/buttons not working once you reach the lobby or menus.

Please use your platform's capture button to take a video. You can upload the footage to a public video hosting site, like YouTube, then post the link here and we’ll be glad to take a look

  • Hello! So I had Steam Input enabled and disabled that as well as steam overlays and ensured I had Discord shutdown and not running in the taskbar. I had done the other troubleshooting methods that you recommended before except for the Xbox accessories app. I didn't even know that existed. I downloaded that and updated the firmware of my controller.

Played for 2 hours and have not had any issues so far. Thank you so much for the assistance! Have a great day!
