Account linking issue with cross save
I'm trying to link my marathon steam account to my Xbox account but seem to have some issues. When I log into bungie.net using my steam account and try to link my Xbox account, I get a message saying (These accounts cannot be linked, already linked to other platforms accounts). Which is odd to me because I never linked an account to anything, this is my first time doing it on either steam or Xbox. I decided to try it the other way around, this time logging into bungie.net with my Xbox account to see if I could link my steam account. I believe I did have some success this time around because I got a message saying something like (Your about to link your steam account. You steam account is already linked to a different bungie.net profile, if you continue that existing bungie.net profile will be abandoned and you will no longer it be able to access if no other accounts are linked). I am a bit confused about this message since this is my first time linking anything to either account. To me it sounds like my steam account will be erased in order to link it to my Xbox since I don't have anything else linked to my steam account? Not sure if I am reading that correctly because I would like my steam account to be the main account on Xbox. The next question I have is does it really matter from which profile I am linking it from for my steam account to be the main account?

That message usually means your Steam account is already attached to a separate Bungie.net profile, even if you never intentionally linked anything before. That can happen if a Bungie.net profile was created automatically the first time you signed in with Steam.
To check which Bungie.net profile is connected to your platform account, sign in to Bungie.net once with Steam and once with Xbox, then compare the profile each login opens. If each login brings you to a different Bungie.net profile, that means the accounts are currently attached to separate profiles. If both logins open the same profile, then they are already connected.
If you decide to continue the link while logged into the Xbox-side profile, Bungie.net is warning that the Steam login will be moved from its current Bungie.net profile to the Xbox-side Bungie.net profile. The old Steam-side Bungie.net profile could become inaccessible if Steam was the only login attached to it.
In order to set up Cross-Save both accounts would need to be linked to the same Bungie.net profile.

I checked both of the profiles, and they are different. The steam one was made recently this year, and the Xbox was made in 2014. The only similarity I see in both is they share the same email address, besides that everything is different. I'm not sure why the steam account won't let me link the Xbox account, but the Xbox account lets me link the steam account. I think I understand what you are saying about the cross save but just to clarify. The warning is basically saying that they are going to migrate the data from the steam bungie profile to the Xbox bungie profile and after that is complete the steam bungie profile will no longer be accessible since all the data went to the Xbox bungie profile. Am I reading that correctly? I Apologize if I sound like a broken record. I just want to make sure I don't lose my marathon steam data when I migrate it to my Xbox bungie profile from my steam bungie profile.

The warning means your Steam account is already connected to a different Bungie.net profile, and linking it from the Xbox-side profile would move that Steam login onto the Xbox-side Bungie.net profile so both platform accounts are on the same Bungie.net profile for Cross Save.
The important part is that if both accounts already have Marathon progress, you will be asked which progress you want to keep. The progress you do not choose will be permanently replaced. The progress is not merged together.
So if you want your Steam progress to be the main progress you use on your Xbox, make sure you choose the Steam Marathon progress when prompted.
Also, linked platform accounts cannot be unlinked afterward unless it is a Twitch account, so please review the confirmation screens carefully before proceeding.
