Marathon PS5 Deluxe Edition Fiasco

Hi there,

Just wanted to inquire on the Marathon Deluxe Edition situation.

As of Friday, June 12, a day after Open Play Week has ended, the Deluxe Edition on the Playstation Store for Marathon states that you can purchase the Base Game, 6 Shells, Weapon and Runner cosmetics, and MTX content for $20. Yet after the purchase, nothing happens. It doesn't show up in your library, no message is given at all, and you are only left to assume, if anything, that you have to now purchase the base game. My initial reaction was shock and anger.

It wasn't until I didn't receive the game that I researched this situation and saw Bungie's tweet. But the issue with Bungie's tweet is that the situation they're referring to is associated purely with Open Play Week.

"Going forward, please note that if you've downloaded Marathon during the Open Play Week but have not purchased Marathon, purchasing the Deluxe Edition upgrade will only grant you access to the Deluxe Edition content for the duration of the Open Play Week, after which accessing this content will require purchase of the Marathon base edition"

This would mean something if I had the Deluxe Edition content even for free week, but as I mentioned before, I purchased this after free week. So my money has almost been sent to the void? That feels largely irritating.

This is where the misleading language comes from mainly, stating that you can purchase the Deluxe Edition, including the Marathon Game, Shells, and ecetera for $20. And I've already purchased it. Bungie's Team has stated on Twitter/X that they've "updated the PlayStation Store messaging to clarify," but they very clearly haven't in the most important spot that buyers like myself will read.

I have also called the PlayStation Support store, to which they have said that because I made the purchase and they can see Marathon in my Collection (as a TRIAL), they cannot refund me.

I'm wondering if anything has been stated on this, or if I will be refunded, or if I will be SOL.

Thank you!

  • Jumping into help with visibility as I'm having the same issue. It looks like Bungie went through and answered many requests the last few days, except for the ones that are pertaining to this issue

  • They finally updated the store today.

On June 5th they added a disclaimer to the games description, but it still showed that the game was included in another section of the listing. They have claimed that anyone who purchased the game prior to the description being updated would receive the base game ( Although, that hasn't happened yet for many). They haven't made any announcement yet for the situation your describing though. Even with the added description, which not everyone reads, it was very misleading and has caused a lot of confusion.

Today, it now has a completely separate listing distinguishing the Standard version, Deluxe Edition, and the Deluxe Upgrade.

I purchased the Deluxe Edition before any disclaimer was added, still don't have the base game, and now the PS store is showing that I purchased the Deluxe Upgrade, when that wasn't even an option when I purchased.

    It's definitely been a fiasco...

I hope they get it sorted out soon.

  • The only thing I can add is a conversation I had with Sony Customer Support yesterday on the phone. He was aware of the issue that we are all having. He kept putting me on hold trying to get an answer for me. In the end he said Bungie should be sending me a code to unlock the game and it might take a few days. I'm not confident that is actually going to happen. He sounded a bit unsure and was apologetic that he couldn't give me a better answer.

Keep in mind I did purchase the game before that June 5th store "description update," but that's the best I've gotten so far.

It feels like this issue is above Customer Support's head. Someone higher up should definitely be giving an update on how they are going to fix this mess. I would rather have purchased the base game when it was on sale, but I was obviously intrigued by what looked like the better deal with the deluxe version. Bungie have a vague response to the numerous posts on this forum dealing with this issue. It's very obvious they are ignoring us for now.

  • Adding my voice and hard evidence here because this is escalating from a simple store UI error to an unauthorized alteration of digital assets.

Like many of you, I purchased the bundle on June 9th. I have video and screenshot proof showing that the main PS Store UI still explicitly listed the base game in the primary bullet points on that date. Bungie's statement about "updating the messaging on June 5th" is factually incorrect regarding the main store interface.

But here is the most critical part that everyone in this thread needs to check right now: Look at your official PSN Transaction History.

Yesterday (June 16th), they retroactively altered my PS5 library database. They removed my 'Deluxe Edition' license and forcefully injected a new SKU called 'Deluxe Upgrade' (if you check the info on it, it literally says "Released on 16/6/2026").

However, my official PSN financial receipt clearly states my payment was for the 'Marathon Deluxe Edition', not an upgrade. They are trying to cover up the original store error by quietly rewriting our library registries to match their narrative, but they cannot alter the immutable financial payment records.

I have already reopened my support ticket and attached this financial proof. PlayStation Support told me in a live chat to go to Bungie, and Bungie sends an automated reply pointing back to PlayStation.

Keep pushing. Go to your PSN account settings, screenshot your exact Transaction History showing "Deluxe Edition", and attach it to your tickets. Changing a purchased digital SKU post-transaction without customer consent is a massive compliance red flag. Don't let them close your cases.

  • Just went to confirm this all myself. They have infact finally changed the store listing so there is the base game, the deluxe edition, and the deluxe edition upgrade. I am in the same boat as OP but I purchesed on the 6th. It says i have both the upgrade and the deluxe edition but not the base game and i can still only download the trial. Both in my transaction history on my ps5, on my Playstation app on my phone and on the email receipt I received, it says that I purchased "Marathon", the game. Im hopful the bungie will send out game codes or sony will hand out the proper licenses. Fingers crossed one of the 2 will happen because as of right now it appears they are trying to sweep it under the rug. As of now im taking screenshots of everything and recording all the evidence I can. I would recommend anyone in the same boat do the same. If there isnt a resolution or at minimum a statement about it by the end of this week i doubt there will be anything at all. In that case, we will have to rally and fight to be heard. Doubt is creeping in but im still hopful boys. Stay strong.

  • Playstation Support is sending me a message basically saying the game has been added to the accounts of affected players, and they apologize for any inconvenience. But I contacted them again today, and when I asked why the game hadn't been added to my account they clarified that was a message from the publisher, and that Bungie hasn't instructed them any further so they are unable to add it to my account.

I thought I was finally getting somewhere at first when they sent the message acknowledging anyone who purchased the Deluxe Edition during the Open Play Week would receive the base game at no cost. The problem is getting them to actually issue the game license!

If you haven't contacted PS Support yet, or only once, I'd suggest doing it again.

They aren't making this easy, but if we keep at it, I'm sure they will get it sorted out.

At this point though, I just wish I bought the standard version. I've spent way too much time dealing with all this.

  • Dude I purchased on the third after checking out the trial and still haven’t heard anything about when these codes are going out. PlayStation support says be patient, but it’s been weeks!

  • Just an FYI to everyone that sees this, if you purchesed during the trial week and still havent received the game, you wont be getting it. Both playstation support and bungie support flat out said that anyone and everyone who has been affected has been properly compensated. Its a blatant lie, but I pushed back for almost 2 full weeks to poth playstation support and bungie support and both said to go to the other until finally bungie said I wasnt eligible to receive a game code becuase my purchase was HOURS after that tweet from one of the developers. Ive talked to other people in the same boat, I know a single person that got a copy of the game and they purchased it on the 2nd. Seams like anyone that purchesed on the 3rd or after are SOL. Bungie is currently experiencing massive layoffs aswell as a number of other issues so this is probably the end of the situation. They successfully swept it under the rug. I say good to the layoffs. Ill be happy to see the studio close after how they've destroyed any good will with their comunity and fired almost all their real talent years ago. Fuck bungie. Sorry to anyone like myself who's money is just lost in the void now. PLEASE protest with your wallet and boycott this shitty company so they go under sooner rather than later and cant fuck over more people. Bungie has been dead for years, dont feel bad or grasp onto nostalgia. Get angry. The state of the industry is a joke and we all just go along with it. If your seeing this, spent money on the game and dont have access. Make your voice heard, plaster your experience everywhere and make sure to let others know. This is wrong, and theres no longer anything we can do about this situation but warn others.

  • UPDATE
This morning I got an email from bungie support asking for proof of purchase, I emailed back with a screenshot of my transaction history on playstation and they sent me a game code for the standard edition! If you havent already, submit a support claim, check your email and remain patient. From what ive seen many others in the same boat as me are receiving codes aswell. I wish ya all luck

  • They reached out for proof of purchase and didn’t respond after sending. I got impatient and just bought the game, but I’ve been having a blast since being back on.

  • Thats retarded. Why would you just purchase anyways. Should've just waited man. It took a couple hours to respond to me, and depending on when you sent the proof it could take up to 24 hours. I dont mean to be an ass but I have to say purchasing the base game at full price after what happend is braindead. This is a big part of the reason why companies can get away with this shit. Glad your in and having fun but damn.

  • Yeah I refuse to buy the game at full price after all of this. I would have gladly purchased at the sale price, and was about to, until I saw that they said they would be issuing the game at no additional cost. In hindsight, I wish I had just bought the standard edition for $27, instead of the deluxe for $14.

They keep marking my support ticket as solved, but reading that a bunch of you guys received the game code yesterday gives me a bit of hope that they will make it right for me too eventually.

    I appreciate the update!

  • Hey JR1dinG, thats really frustrating that they keep automatically marking the support ticket as solved. Maybe try submitting another one under a differnt issue request? Thats the only thing I can think of becuase it sounds like its being flagged and marked as solved automatically because of the previous ticket. Sounds like an automated response.

  • Yeah when it hit the 1 month mark, I was like I am obviously not getting this game. Then I just went and got it. Don’t get me wrong, I would have still preferred to have gotten it at the $14 price that I originally thought I did, but with PlayStation giving me the run around, and bungie basically going unresponsive on the support ticket side I felt like I had no other options left.

  • Yeah I get it, it really seemed like they weren't going to be issuing the game to anyone. I almost just bought the game too, but figured I would just wait until Season 3 and grab it next time it went on sale. I just couldn't bring myself to pay full price after everything. But I've also missed out on a month of playtime because of it.

packabowl - I got it! I made another post after it kept getting auto marked as solved, and Bungie support opened a new ticket for me, and they just now sent me the code.

  • I'm happy people are finally getting the game. Crazy it took nearly a month for it to get solved. I never got it but I already threw in the towel a little while ago and got refunded from Sony. Very frustrating to deal with. I've been keeping an eye on this forum just to see if anyone will eventually get access to the game. JR1ding, you've been posting since the beginning so congrats on finally getting it.

  • Thanks man! I had actually given up on it after they denied my support ticket the first time. But yesterday I got notified about a couple people who posted an update saying they finally received a game code. So I figured it was worth giving it another shot.

I'm happy to finally have access to the game. But also, I would have much rather bought the standard edition for $27 and been able to avoid all of this. Plus I could have been playing the game for the past month.

I'm glad it worked out for many people though, but yeah, I'm sure there are many more who either got a refund from Sony or just moved on.
