Game freezes on startup before PS/Bungie logos

Second time encountering this issue.  The pattern seems to be:
1. Play a session without any issue earlier in the day
2. Attempt to play again later in the day (~2ish hours from the last session in this case)
Bug: Game freezes on launch before the ps/bungie logos.  The Steam overlay pop-up in the lower-right that usually goes away after a few seconds remains there, leading me to think the game has completely crashed at this point.

Saw a similar issue in https://help.marathonthegame.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/50788783126292-My-game-keeps-freezing-on-launch-before-the-sign-in-screen so I ran through the advice given there: ESC key does nothing.  No corrupt files in Steam file verification, no overlays active, restart did not resolve the issue, drivers are up to date and I don't have another network to test with (not even sure what you mean by this, get another ISP?  I release/renewed my IP, no effect.)

    Hello there,
    Thanks for the detailed write-up.

Based on what you described, this does not sound like a basic “verify files and update drivers” case. The fact that it freezes before the PS/Bungie logos, leaves the Steam popup hanging on screen, and can happen on a later launch after an earlier clean session points more toward an early startup/bootflow hang than a normal in-match crash.

There is work around Marathon startup specifically for missing bootflow UI / black-screen-at-launch behavior, including cases tied to package I/O problems from a previous launch. There were also PC fixes made around Steam overlay interaction and startup/display initialization issues in later retail work, which is relevant since you’re seeing the Steam popup remain stuck when the launch hangs.

So the short version is: your report sounds credible, it matches the kind of startup-side issue the team has already had to investigate, and “try another network” is definitely not the most helpful suggestion for a freeze that happens before the logos even appear.

If you can add it, the most useful follow-up details would be whether this is always on the second launch of the day, whether Marathon stays hung in Task Manager or fully stops responding, and your rough local time when the last failed launch happened.

  • I found what was causing this and it is a strange one.  It happens when I attempt to launch Marathon when my wireless headset (Corsair HS80) is charging via USB (so it's connected to my PC both via the wireless dongle and a USB cable).  This feels like a very particular-to-my-setup issue but I wanted to leave my resolution here in case it helps anyone else.  Just reproduced it multiple times and the game launches fine as long as the headset is not connected via USB.  Feel free to close my ticket!
