Marathon PS5 Deluxe Edition Fiasco

Hi there,

Just wanted to inquire on the Marathon Deluxe Edition situation.

As of Friday, June 12, a day after Open Play Week has ended, the Deluxe Edition on the Playstation Store for Marathon states that you can purchase the Base Game, 6 Shells, Weapon and Runner cosmetics, and MTX content for $20. Yet after the purchase, nothing happens. It doesn't show up in your library, no message is given at all, and you are only left to assume, if anything, that you have to now purchase the base game. My initial reaction was shock and anger.

It wasn't until I didn't receive the game that I researched this situation and saw Bungie's tweet. But the issue with Bungie's tweet is that the situation they're referring to is associated purely with Open Play Week.

"Going forward, please note that if you've downloaded Marathon during the Open Play Week but have not purchased Marathon, purchasing the Deluxe Edition upgrade will only grant you access to the Deluxe Edition content for the duration of the Open Play Week, after which accessing this content will require purchase of the Marathon base edition"

This would mean something if I had the Deluxe Edition content even for free week, but as I mentioned before, I purchased this after free week. So my money has almost been sent to the void? That feels largely irritating.

This is where the misleading language comes from mainly, stating that you can purchase the Deluxe Edition, including the Marathon Game, Shells, and ecetera for $20. And I've already purchased it. Bungie's Team has stated on Twitter/X that they've "updated the PlayStation Store messaging to clarify," but they very clearly haven't in the most important spot that buyers like myself will read.

I have also called the PlayStation Support store, to which they have said that because I made the purchase and they can see Marathon in my Collection (as a TRIAL), they cannot refund me.

I'm wondering if anything has been stated on this, or if I will be refunded, or if I will be SOL.

Thank you!

  • Jumping into help with visibility as I'm having the same issue. It looks like Bungie went through and answered many requests the last few days, except for the ones that are pertaining to this issue

  • They finally updated the store today.

On June 5th they added a disclaimer to the games description, but it still showed that the game was included in another section of the listing. They have claimed that anyone who purchased the game prior to the description being updated would receive the base game ( Although, that hasn't happened yet for many). They haven't made any announcement yet for the situation your describing though. Even with the added description, which not everyone reads, it was very misleading and has caused a lot of confusion.

Today, it now has a completely separate listing distinguishing the Standard version, Deluxe Edition, and the Deluxe Upgrade.

I purchased the Deluxe Edition before any disclaimer was added, still don't have the base game, and now the PS store is showing that I purchased the Deluxe Upgrade, when that wasn't even an option when I purchased.

    It's definitely been a fiasco...

I hope they get it sorted out soon.

  • The only thing I can add is a conversation I had with Sony Customer Support yesterday on the phone. He was aware of the issue that we are all having. He kept putting me on hold trying to get an answer for me. In the end he said Bungie should be sending me a code to unlock the game and it might take a few days. I'm not confident that is actually going to happen. He sounded a bit unsure and was apologetic that he couldn't give me a better answer.

Keep in mind I did purchase the game before that June 5th store "description update," but that's the best I've gotten so far.

It feels like this issue is above Customer Support's head. Someone higher up should definitely be giving an update on how they are going to fix this mess. I would rather have purchased the base game when it was on sale, but I was obviously intrigued by what looked like the better deal with the deluxe version. Bungie have a vague response to the numerous posts on this forum dealing with this issue. It's very obvious they are ignoring us for now.

  • Adding my voice and hard evidence here because this is escalating from a simple store UI error to an unauthorized alteration of digital assets.

Like many of you, I purchased the bundle on June 9th. I have video and screenshot proof showing that the main PS Store UI still explicitly listed the base game in the primary bullet points on that date. Bungie's statement about "updating the messaging on June 5th" is factually incorrect regarding the main store interface.

But here is the most critical part that everyone in this thread needs to check right now: Look at your official PSN Transaction History.

Yesterday (June 16th), they retroactively altered my PS5 library database. They removed my 'Deluxe Edition' license and forcefully injected a new SKU called 'Deluxe Upgrade' (if you check the info on it, it literally says "Released on 16/6/2026").

However, my official PSN financial receipt clearly states my payment was for the 'Marathon Deluxe Edition', not an upgrade. They are trying to cover up the original store error by quietly rewriting our library registries to match their narrative, but they cannot alter the immutable financial payment records.

I have already reopened my support ticket and attached this financial proof. PlayStation Support told me in a live chat to go to Bungie, and Bungie sends an automated reply pointing back to PlayStation.

Keep pushing. Go to your PSN account settings, screenshot your exact Transaction History showing "Deluxe Edition", and attach it to your tickets. Changing a purchased digital SKU post-transaction without customer consent is a massive compliance red flag. Don't let them close your cases.

  • Just went to confirm this all myself. They have infact finally changed the store listing so there is the base game, the deluxe edition, and the deluxe edition upgrade. I am in the same boat as OP but I purchesed on the 6th. It says i have both the upgrade and the deluxe edition but not the base game and i can still only download the trial. Both in my transaction history on my ps5, on my Playstation app on my phone and on the email receipt I received, it says that I purchased "Marathon", the game. Im hopful the bungie will send out game codes or sony will hand out the proper licenses. Fingers crossed one of the 2 will happen because as of right now it appears they are trying to sweep it under the rug. As of now im taking screenshots of everything and recording all the evidence I can. I would recommend anyone in the same boat do the same. If there isnt a resolution or at minimum a statement about it by the end of this week i doubt there will be anything at all. In that case, we will have to rally and fight to be heard. Doubt is creeping in but im still hopful boys. Stay strong.
