Chat Audio Busted
There does not seem to be a repeatable way to trigger it, but my mic and audio chat will entirely cut out for sessions. I’ve tried quitting the game and restarting, checked every setting and updated all my mic and controller software. The mic works fine in party chat and the game audio is there, but my mic isn’t registering my voice, nor does the game even tell me that someone else is chatting (the mic icons don’t change for other players) I am playing on Series X

Hello there,
Thank you for reaching out.
We are aware of situations where audio and mics are not functioning properly in game voice and proximity chat.
We are currently investigating these situations.
Here are some steps to try
1. Get out of Xbox party chat
Party chat can completely override in-game chat.
Xbox button → Parties & chats → leave all parties.
Then relaunch Marathon and join a match with no party active to test.
2. Check Marathon’s Social → Voice settings
Marathon has its own voice routing separate from system audio.
In the main menu:
Go to Settings → Social.
Make sure:
Voice Chat = On
Proximity Voice Chat = On (if you want prox chat)
Check Crew Chat Input Voice Mode:
If it’s on Push-to-Talk, try switching to Open Mic to see if that’s more stable.
3. Make sure you’re not muted in the HUD
Easy to miss and it persists between sessions:
In-run, look at the bottom-right where your crew portraits are.
If your own icon has a little X / muted speaker, click/select yourself and unmute.
Several players on Series X/console found they’d accidentally muted themselves this way and prox/team chat silently stopped working.
Also check the Quick Proximity Chat Toggle on the bottom bar in your inventory/menu screen – it needs to be enabled for prox chat to work at all.
4. Confirm the correct input/output device in Marathon
Marathon uses a “default communication device” that can differ from general audio:
On console, this defaults to your controller. If you’re using a wireless or USB headset, make sure in Social settings the:
Voice Input Device = your headset/mic
Voice Output Device = your headset
If it’s left on the controller while you’re actually using a headset, your game audio will work but no chat will register.
5. Double-check Xbox audio & privacy on Series X
Audio routing
Settings → General → Volume & audio output
Make sure your headset is selected for chat audio and the mic isn’t muted at the console level.
Privacy
Settings → Account → Privacy & online safety → Xbox privacy → View details & customize → Communication & multiplayer
Ensure “You can communicate with voice and text” is allowed (at least for Friends).
6. When it hard-breaks mid-session
When you get one of those “entire session is dead” cases:
Quit the app fully (Xbox button → highlight Marathon → Menu button → Quit).
If that doesn’t bring chat back, do a full power cycle:
Hold the console’s power button for ~10 seconds → wait 30 sec → power back on → launch Marathon again.
