Severe screen tearing and choppy stuttering & video settings do not affect performance

  • Bungie Account Name:  Whizzing Spoon#7712 (I guess)
  • Platform: Steam
  • Description of Issue:

note: resolution scalling was always off, even when I stated "any video settings set"

- Most video settings need a game restart to properly apply (the game doesn't warn about this).

- Changing settings does virtually nothing: the game on lowest settings SOMETIMES generates 10% more frames compared to highest settings, but sometimes works WORSE than on highest settings.

- game screen-tears no matter what. VSync does nothing. I have never seen any title to screen-tear this severe. Other games tear less on VSync turned OFF. (any video settings set).

- 90% of the time/location/situation there is this weird choppy stuttering  (any video settings set).

- Weird choppy stuttering can't be detected by advanced fps counter in GPU software: it shows stable 60fps.

- Sometimes there is random 0.5s stutter that matches with dip in GPU utilization graph. Any map.

- Can't reach stable 60fps in many areas of Outpost, mainly outside or while looking in Pinwheel direction but also in random places.

- Game tend to drop below 60fps when VSync is ON on every map, but with VSync OFF it almost never drop below 60fps on Perimeter and Dire Marsh.

- Sometimes the stuttering and tearing are just gone for the whole run, sometimes they start mid-run (any video settings set).

- Same areas of maps will tear and stutter on one run and be much better on another one (tested by looking at the same directions)

- Once I managed to fix stuttering and tearing by turning VSync off, on, off and on again mid Dire Marsh run. After that I turned the game off, problem came back and I was never able to do reproduce it.

- The game utilizes 50–60% of the GPU and around 100% of the CPU all the time (any video settings set).

- 60-70% CPU usage in the menu (any video settings set).

- The game works WORSE with patch update and much worse than the SERVER SLAM build.

  • Rough Date and Time of issue: Big performance drop compared to Server Slam build and again declining since premiere build (rising stuttering, choppines and screen tear issues)
  • Hardware: Ryzen 5 5600 OC to 4.5 GHz 32 MB, 32GB 3600MHz CL18, Sapphire Pure Radeon 7700XT, MoBo AsRock B550M, SSD GoodRam PX600 1TB M.2, Windows 11, 1920x1200 60Hz. Newest drivers. Tested on OCCT, other games and test videos to eliminate the suspicion of hardware problems (mainly for tearing or choppiness)

Everything here was tested by me in the form of playing normal runs on all maps and by runs just for the sake of testing: runs of repeating the same routes on all maps and taking notes of everything on the go, tested on the current build (20–21.03.2026). I wasn't able to test the Cryo map because of the level cap.

    Hi there,

Please see our Marathon Storage and System Requirements guide to double-check that your system meets the current minimum specs. If it does, please double-check that Windows is fully updated to the latest version and try installing the game on another disk (if possible) to rule out potential hardware issues.

Please also note that the game is not officially supported on laptop devices, even if those devices otherwise meet the minimum requirements.

  • I can confirm I have experienced many similar issues. My GPU is never being more than 60% utilized while my CPU swings between 60% usage and 100%. And I can already say, I've tried for more than 10 hours over multiple days to troubleshoot this problem. And until the performance issues are addressed I actually cannot play this game.
