PC Randomly Shuts Down

Hello,

Just picked up Marathon and I'm totally addicted to it! Unfortunately, the game seems to randomly completely shut down my PC. There is no BSOD, no error in the event viewer (other than "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."). The machine simply shuts off.

At first I thought it was a PSU problem, because the thing was loud and hot anyway. So I pulled some strings to afford a new one, and the game was perfect for a day- but now the shut downs have returned.

I guess for context, I've seen this happen in exactly one other game one time- Nier Automata, about a month ago. Nothing else has ever caused my PC to behave like this.

Please help me enjoy this game!

    Hi there,

    Thank you for reaching out.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with stability when trying to play the game.

To start out, if you are on PC, we'd recommend trying to verify the game file integrity through steam to see if it helps. If the issue persists, please ensure that all of your drivers, windows, and your BIOS are all fully up-to-date. Lastly, if those two steps don't help, please try uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

If you still run into the same issue despite all of this, can you provide us with a copy of your DxDiag? You can copy and paste it over on PasteBin and provide us with the link.

  • Here's the PasteBin! I've tried verifying the integrity and reinstalling, as well as setting it to high priority with Process Lasso on a whim, and there's been no luck. I actually just had enough certs to extract from the marsh for the first time and it shut off on me.

  • Hi there,

Thanks for sending the DxDiag. It shows that Windows is crashing under load rather than Marathon simply closing.

Please try these troubleshooting steps in order:

    • Disable or uninstall Meta Quest Link, Air Link, Oculus software, and the Meta virtual monitor. Restart the PC and test Marathon.
    • Clean-install the latest NVIDIA driver and disable overlays from NVIDIA, Steam, Discord, Oculus, and MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner.
    • Reset BIOS settings to default and disable XMP or any CPU/GPU overclocking.
    • Test the memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic or MemTest86.
    • Check your CPU/GPU temperatures and make sure the GPU power cables are firmly connected.
    • Free up more space on the Windows drive.
