Still unable to get past sign in screen

  • Bungie Account Name - Asstronaut#4576
  • Platform - Steam
  • Description of Issue - Game won't get past signing in screen
  • Rough Date and Time of issue - last update at the end of March / start of April (Update 1.0.5.2)
  • Repro steps -Just trying to play the game on a 4G/5G connection.

Tried everything on the network troubleshooting page and several other fixes suggested by people on the forum and on reddit, including: Reinstalling the game, making sure marathon is allowed through the firewall, disabling the firewall altogether, flushing DNS and resetting some stuff with ipconfig. Nothing works. Game used to work fine before that, every other online game I play still works fine, only happens with Marathon.

Using a VPN makes the game go through into the main menu, but won't connect to matches. Disabling the VPN while in the main menu will give a network error, go back to the start screen and then the game will get past the signing in screen without the VPN, but still won't connect to matches.

It's been almost a month with a few updates happening to the game and this is still not fixed, nor we got any communication from the devs or anyone about the topic. It would be nice to know if a fix is being worked on or if the people who have this problem should just refund the game.

  • Hi Asstronaut,

I finally found a workaround for the exact same issue on PS5. Like you, I was stuck for a month.

Since you're on a 4G/5G connection, the root cause is likely a routing error between your mobile ISP and the game servers. My setup was on PS5, but the logic should be the same for PC: I managed to bypass the loop by creating a "VPN Gateway" using a PC and SoftEther VPN to "teleport" the connection.

If you have an extra PC or a laptop to act as a bridge, this might be your best shot at getting back into the game. I’ve posted a detailed step-by-step guide on this forum titled "Hi everyone, After nearly a month of seeking help..." (or check my profile for the latest post).

It’s a bit of a technical hurdle, but since the official support didn't exactly provide us with any meaningful help, I figured we’re better off fixing it ourselves. Hope to see you back on the track soon.

  • When you were having this, were you getting a weasel error on sign in attempt?

Not sure if what's just started happening to mine is the same as yours or different-- I suspect that mine might be that the game's gotten into a bad state trying to retrieve loot from a closed server. Got DC'd with Weasel at the exfil while downed, now any time I try to join, instant weasel out. Verified integrity of game cache, made sure I have all updates, nothing's changed with my network, can connect to everything else fine-- It just seems like it's freaking out trying to retrieve the result from this one lobby as best as I can tell.

Be great if there was an actual log we could look through or submit rather than just an error quip though

  • Hi Nudgarrobot,

That sounds like a different issue from what we (Asstronaut and I) are experiencing. In our case, there’s no error code like "Weasel"—it just stays on the "signing in" screen forever due to what is clearly an ISP routing bug on Bungie's end. The lack of error codes in our case is honestly making this whole situation so much more confusing and harder to track.

My VPN method is also just a workaround, not a true fix. While it lets you bypass the login loop, playing a fast-paced game like this over a VPN on a 4G/5G connection isn't exactly ideal for latency.

It sounds like your character data might be stuck in a "bad state" server-side. I totally agree—having access to actual logs would be so much better than these cryptic error names. Hope you get it sorted!
