Friends List gone after linking playstation/xbox account

  • Bungie Account Name - "Eight-Ball#4242" ; before linking it was "Eight-Ball#1037"
  • Platform - Steam
  • Description of Issue - After linking my Playstation account to my Bungie account, all of the friends that I had added during my time playing Marathon are gone from my friends list.
  • Rough Date and Time of issue - 06/03/26
  • Repro steps - Went to Bungie.Net. Went to account settings, logged in using my Steam and proceeded to link my Xbox Account and then my Playstation account. Waited until now to play because servers were down. Friends list is gone.

    Hello there,

    Thank you for your report.

We understand that your friends list disappeared after linking your platform account to your Bungie account. We're sorry to hear of this, as we can imagine how this may have caused concern. If you've added friends before linking to your main account, those friends will unfortunately be lost as they are only stored on your previous temporary Bungie account, which would have been overwritten when you connected to the main account. We realize this isn't ideal, and have taken note of your report concerning what you've experienced. Your understanding in this is appreciated.

  • Please give a warning. With the new platform specific skins you guys have added people are GOING to link their accounts and lose all their friends. Please please give a warning.

  • I also experienced this, and it was only because I was curious about the Bungie store options linked to the in-game Codex completions.

I haven't played a Bungie game on Xbox in several years, and Marathon has been a big new source of social activity for me now that I'm on Playstation and don't have a lot of free time because of a new job. It was honestly devestating to see the list of over a dozen players I met through the game completely disappear after I linked accounts *just to see what the Bungie Store was advertising*.

Y'all made it really easy to add connections in game, but they weren't actually being added to a Playstation friends list, just a Bungie side list. Now that they are gone, I doubt I'll ever stumble upon them randomly again. And from what I've gathered from two IRL friends I play with, I completely disappeared from thier connections list as well.

If I'd known the account linkage would do this, I wouldn't have gone through with it. I just did it on a whim and some sudden urge to keep continuity with the Bungie account I've been using for over a decade. The fact this cannot be reversed or the list otherwise restored is... extremely disappointing to say the least.

  • Yup, this just happened to me. Kinda sad to see the players I connected with get wiped from my account.

I KNOW you could fix or at least mitigate this issue with one code push in just a few minutes/hours. Either add a function to collect and add the temporary friend IDs to the new DB entry when we confirm or, if you wanna be lazy, just change the page where we link accounts to include a disclaimer about this (simple plain-text added to a UI component) so that we can manually write down gamertags to add back later on our own.

Just updating the text on the account linking page would be a quick win to avoid deteriorating the social fabric of your already struggling game.
