PC fully shutting off when playing Marathon
Hello!
My PC fully shuts off when playing Marathon, and it is doing so with increasing frequency. It does not appear to do so at rest or with other games. There is no blue screen, and it does not attempt to reboot unless I manually press the power button.
System info:
OS: WIndows 11 Pro 64 Bit
GPU: NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4070 TI SUPER
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8Core
MB: GIGABYTE B650 GAMING X AX V2
32GB RAM
Using Steam/Steam Overlay/Steam Background Recording
Using Voicemeeter for audio splitting
Peripherals: Wireless mouse, Wired keyboard, Bluetooth XBOX controller, USB wireless headphones
This has happened:
- across multiple patches spanning back at least 3 weeks
- With steam background recording enabled/disabled.
- With HDR enabled/disabled.
- Mid match, while loading into a match, and on the menu.
- While connected to the internet via wifi and via ethernet.
- With multiple PSUs.
- In Steam Big Picture Mode and not in Steam Big Picture Mode
- with microsoft game bar running/disabled
Testing/diagnostics:
The Windows Event Log and Reliability Log only show 'this pc shut down unexpectedly.'
Memtestx86 passed.
Furmark didn't cause PC to crash under stress test.
CPU-Z doesn't cause pc to crash under stress test.
DxDiag shows some older GPU issues, but I believe those are from ~2y ago and haven't occurred since (LiveKernelEvents) and aren't showing up in event viewer recently.
DxDiag available here --> pastes.io/pWqHJp87
Steps taken:
- updated graphics drivers
- reinstalled graphics drivers (without using DDU, DDU and reinstall in progress)
- verified game file integrity with steam, happened afterward
- reinstalled Marathon --> testing now
- disabled Steam Overlay
- replaced PSU
- run all Windows updates
- using a different power strip / plugging directly into the wall
Things I have not tried:
- DDU uninstalling my graphics drivers and reinstalling (in progress, will test after)
- updating BIOS
- looking for other driver updates
Comments
Hello there,
Thank you for reaching out.
We are aware of situations where third party applications such as Voicemeeter can cause issues with the game application.
We are looking into these situations.
Your report has been passed along to the relevant channels for further investigation.
also testing disabling the Voicemeeter emulated sound device and running the game without Voicemeeter on as there is a Steam forum post about issues with some sound controllers here --> https://steamcommunity.com/app/3065800/discussions/0/766311764554106063/
Hey, quick update - it happened again after:
- DDU uninstalling and reinstalling graphics drivers
- fully uninstalling and reinstalling Marathon
- uninstalling and reinstalling Battleye
---> briefly receiving Battleye PLUM errors after this
- giving Battleye and Marathon firewall exceptions
- disabling Voicemeeter virtual audio device and making sure the software wasn't running
- disabling a virtual monitor device
- disabling a virtual ethernet port
I could still:
- update BIOS
- check for Motherboard updates
- check for CPU updates
Add'l context -
I think using a nvme drive, I believe that's in the dxdiag.
I am unsure what to do next short of sending my PC off for repairs and would appreciate any insight -- this has not happened with other games or applications.
I've updated my BIOS and applied all driver updates for my motherboard.
I've updated the firmware for my sdd. CrystalDiskInfo and Samsung Magician rated my drive health at 98%.
I set my NVIDIA Shader Cache to 100GB.
Ran CHKDSK.
I ran a couple games on outpost and immediately had a full shutdown after loading into cryo.
