Marathon's Asia matchmaking seems broken and needs urgent attention
I am a PS5 player in Asia with cross-play enabled, playing from Korea.
First of all, I think Marathon is a well-made game. For players who enjoy this genre, its overall quality is quite good.
However, the biggest problem right now is matchmaking.
From a gamer’s perspective, a current concurrent player count of around 20,000 should not result in matchmaking taking more than 5 minutes this consistently in Asia. This suggests that there may be a serious problem with the game's matchmaking filter, the Asia server structure, or the matchmaking system itself.
It does not feel like a simple lack of players. It feels more like something is fundamentally wrong on the technical side.
I also feel that Bungie may not be receiving enough feedback from Asian players, so the severity of this issue may not be fully understood.
This has already been going on for about a month. Even when the player count was around 40,000, Asia still struggled with this problem, and it was difficult to play regularly.
Bungie should investigate what is causing matchmaking in Asia to fail so often and adjust the system so that players in the region can be matched together more frequently.
Right now, even with PC and PS5 cross-play enabled, matchmaking can still take more than 5 minutes or end in a timeout error, even around midnight or 1 a.m. local time.
Even if you include console players in the total population, the fact that matchmaking still fails for a player base well above 25,000 suggests that the system is broken.
If this cannot be properly solved, then Bungie should at least consider a server selection system where players can directly choose regions such as Asia or America, similar to ARC Raiders.
Asian players have already been waiting through 5-minute matchmaking queues since launch, match after match, simply because we like this game.
But there is a limit to how long players can keep doing that out of love alone.
Bungie has been updating the game regularly, which is appreciated.
But beyond gameplay changes, it is important that players can feel the online service itself is functioning properly.
Right now, matchmaking is the first thing that needs to be re-examined and fixed.
