Extract issue on perimeter

Running for final extract, my fill team mate calls guarded even though final spawns in the same location. I get to guarded with plenty of time and could have walked to final but I stayed in the guarded one just to watch my runner die when the timer ended. This is my first experience of this situation, can someone please explain to me why an active extract doesn’t enter count down the same as final does. To say I’m pissed off is an understatement.
