Lighting Issue Since Wednesday 25th March (Post Patch)
Hello Bungie Team
I just wanted to raise a potential lighting issue that I've noticed since this week’s patch, and I first encountered since playing on Wednesday 25th March.
Since that day, certain aspects of the lighting seem to have changed noticeably so and in most cases as a detriment to visual clarity.
I am playing on PC through Steam.
To give examples of the ones I've spotted so far:
Issue 1: Black levels seem to have changed. Walking around darker areas and especially when approaching a wall, what was dark before but still visible, is now essentially pitch black. As I walk towards and away from the wall surface or space, I can see the lighting shifting to a state where the black levels of the image almost seem crushed. To give an example of where this is at it’s worst, on the Outpost map, upstairs in the Dorm area, there is the Mida quest to open a crate behind a shelf. Before I even get fully right up to the shelf and wall, the entire image is just black (weapon and hud are displaying correctly) and the Trunk is not even visible except for the green/yellow UI prompt to let you know it’s a quest interactable. This issue is not exclusive to the Outpost map and is felt on all maps.
Issue 2: Certain small light highlights are now over exposed and seem way brighter than normal. I first noticed this on the iron sights for the Hardline rifle, which before although nice and bright, you could still just see it's very defined rectangle. Since the patch, the iron sight is now even brighter but on screen has an obscuring circle halo of red light, making it much more difficult to line up shots.
Issue 3: I also have perceived that the yellow pulses from proximity sensors are now much brighter than they were before as well as the red flashes of the UESC bots exploding when you kill them.
To confirm my specs and the troubleshooting I have tried so far:
AMD 9950X3D
64GB RAM
AMD 9070XT
UltraGear™ 32 inch OLED 4K UHD 240Hz
By default I always have HDR turned on in Windows itself and most games appear correct without issue.
I have my monitor calibrated accurately to a point where normally I don’t have to touch any brightness settings in game to correct for any over exposure or blown out highlights etc. In the case of Marathon, I have the midpoint left at it’s default of 50 but the Nits I have to reduce from 1000 to 600 otherwise bright lighting like when it is sunny after rain on Dire Marsh or when looking at the Anomaly is very blown out.
I have also tried just playing the game in SDR with HDR also disabled in Windows, and whilst certain issues like the Hardline iron sight are resolved due to the naturally dimmer image, the black levels of darker areas and corners is still noticeably worse than earlier this week.
Lastly I also tried with a number of different graphics settings from the lowest to max on both SDR and HDR and nothing seems to make a difference.
I am currently running the latest AMD driver of 26.3.1 and have not noticed any other colour changes with either windows or any other game.
I was hoping you could take a look to see if anything has indeed changed and to provide an update if an issue is indeed found and can hopefully be resolved in a coming update.
Thank you for your time :)
Kind regards
Torgaron
