Extreme Performance Issues - We want an update

Hey,

I’m gonna be straight with you. Performance in Marathon is still in a really bad spot.

I played both the alpha and the server slam, and honestly it felt rough back then. I held off buying the game because I figured you’d iron things out before release. But after picking it up a few days ago… it basically feels the same.

I’m on a pretty solid PC, so this shouldn’t be happening.

I managed to fix the worst of the mouse input delay by disabling overlays (saw that suggestion from you guys in other threads), and yeah, it helped a bit. The game feels slightly more responsive and FPS is a bit more stable.

But overall? Still not even close to acceptable.

  • Outpost is borderline unplayable when thunder kicks in. I get drops to like 40–50 FPS
  • Dire Marsh is all over the place. Around 90 FPS in some spots, then suddenly 50 in open areas
  • Indoors feels fine, but the second you step outside it just tanks randomly

And the weird part is that the game doesn’t tank nearly "that much resources" to justify this. This isn’t “Can it run Crysis” type of visuals, nor are the calculations not even close to the likes of f.ex. Tarkov. So it’s hard not to feel like something is seriously off with optimization.

I’ve seen people with way worse PCs getting similar performance as I do, which makes it even more confusing. CPU and GPU load never even closes in to 100%, and the fps remains the same no matter what settings I use. Highest/ Low, same result.

At this point, I just want some clarity:

  • Do you actually know what’s causing this?
  • Are you actively working on fixing it?
  • When can we realistically expect proper optimization?

Right now it just feels like we’re guessing and tweaking settings for a game that should already be running smoothly.

Specs worth mentioning:
CPU: Ryzen 7600X
GPU: 9070XT
MEM: Kingston CL30 (32 gb @6000mhz SSD: M2. 1TB (SSD)
Connection: Fiber, 1000/1000
Windows 11* Game mode turned on, HAGS etc. EXPO. Resolution 2K. (Just to exclude any other ideas, my frames in other games remain 140fps + with everything maxed out more or less)

    Hello there,
Thank you for your report and additional information.

We have taken note of your report and detailed specifications. We are aware of performance issues and are currently investigating. Be advised that optimizations are always ongoing to ensure the game is smooth across different hardware and platforms. Your patience and understanding as we work to improve the game is appreciated.

  • Hi again,

Thanks for the reply, but honestly I expected more transparency than what you provided..

I also expected some level of acknowledgment in your recent “performance tips” post. Right now, it comes across as if you’re framing this as a user-side issue, when it clearly isn’t. This isn’t about hardware, - it’s about optimization, and the optimization is lacking bigtime.

If a PC can run other newly released titles smoothly without tweaking settings or disabling features, and marathon isn’t pushing some kind of revolutionary technical boundary, it’s just poorly optimized. I think you’d reach the same conclusion. It doesn’t even matter whether I run everything on low or max settings, - the FPS is practically the same. Sitting below 100 FPS in a game like this is honestly hard to justify.

In its current state, the game is borderline unplayable for anyone who cares about pvp. Performance drops, unstable FPS, and input issues directly impact competitiveness, and that’s not something you can fix with settings.

On top of that, this will inevitably affect matchmaking. It already takes time to find games, and the longer these issues persist, the more players will drop off. Just looking at your Discord and forums makes it clear this isn’t an isolated problem.

I genuinely don’t understand how this isn’t your top priority. Both to clearly acknowledge and to resolve as quickly as possible.
