I came here for this same issue. I am also on PS5. I attempted to complete this contract twice unsuccessfully. To clarify, I am attempting to complete “Equitable Distribution 1/4”.
1. I successfully secured the self-erasing data drive from Hauler.
2. I visited the DECON machine in Overflow. On second attempt, I visited the DECON machine in North Relay.
3. I was able to click square to open the DECON machine. The machine does open, which sends me to my backpack.
4. The self-erasing data drive is in a normal backpack slot. The only clear option is to click square to drop the item.
5. The item falls to the floor. I would expect the DECON machine to take the drive.
“Drop” is the only available option.
The item is in my backpack along with my items. I saw a screenshot elsewhere that there was a “DECON” slot separate from other backpack items holding the drive. That was not the case for me.
I have tried to stand at multiple distances and stand on top of the machine. I was even able to drop the drive on top of the DECON machine, but it would not satisfy the contract.

Update: I was able to complete the contract last night, after the maintenance window. DECON area was visible while in backpack (to right of backpack items) … dragged item from backpack slot into DECON slot, using L2 to “move item.”
Same here it s not a bug but a bad design choice
