Can't add players

For the past few weeks I have sent and received Friend request but upon trying to accept them from either side they simply do not work, all that happens is you click accept or even deny the screen changes to the HUD with the options "join, invite, request sent" with the join grayed out of course. I've met a few good players I enjoyed playing with but I can't add them and have no way to contact them to tell them to add me on steam. What is going on and how do i resolve this issue to add these players?
