Game Won't Launch on Steam

Remaking the same post because: no answers. I have 8 days remaining for my refund on Steam.

*I sent out a ticket for them and they didn't reply, they changed the Status to solved. Wtf?

I purchased Marathon yesterday, and the game won't launch on Steam

  1. I click "Play" on Steam
  2. It opens the "BattlEye Launcher"
  3. The BattlEye Launcher window closes and I can see my windows cursor loading something
  4. Nothing happens afterward and the "Play" on Steam button becomes available again like the game is not open

I tried every possible fix I've found online but none worked, such like:

  • Reinstalling BattlEye
  • Creating a new Windows user
  • Enabling Secure Boot on BIOS
  • Running on compatibility mode

I've seen online that old CPUs without AVX2 support can't launch the game, and that's my case. I have 16gb RAM, GTX 1660 TI and a I7-3770. Even though I am aware of my old CPU, Marathon would be the first game that won't even launch. I played recent games and they all work, even Arc Raiders.

If that's the case, I would be reliefed if Bungie would confirm this or help me out. I just want a confirmation that my spec doesn't run this game so I can ask for my refund.

  • I'm having a similar issue, but Marathon and Battleye will run as background processes but nothing will launch. I have a GTX 1080 and a Ryzen 7 1700 so I have AVX support, so I don't think that's the issue. Also like you, this is the first game I have had issues with ever.

  • Ariakon just checked your CPU online yeah it does have AVX2 support so the issue might be other. Most people have been thinking the game wouldn't run because some CPU didn't support AVX2 but if yours doesn't launch the game then it might be other issue.

No word from any dev or even support on this and its something that has been happening since the server slam. I haven't bought the game yet due to this issue.

  • According to the spec sheet on AMD's website, the Ryzen 7 1700 does not support AVX2. Listed under "Key Features" at the bottom is only AVX. https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/processors/ryzen/ryzen-1000-series/amd-ryzen-7-1700.html

Would be really nice to have clarification if this was actually the issue and if there's work being done to mitigate/fix it. ^^

  • Bungie, due to the addition of the AVX2 requirement, lost many players who bought the game but could not play, and it is unlikely that they will remove this requirement, because even on the official marathon discord and forum there are many people complaining about the avx2 requirement, but Bungie just asks for the characteristics of the PC and puts the label solved

  • AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Specs | TechPowerUp CPU Database

It says that the CPU supports AVX2 so I highly doubt that's a mistake.

Its just that on the AMD website they didn't properly list it and they just put it as AVX support.

For instance this CPU is the minimum requirement for running Marathon and it doesn't list AVX at all on AMD website:

AMD Ryzen™ 5 2600H Drivers and Downloads | Latest Version

On techpowerup it does though: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Specs | TechPowerUp CPU Database

So yeah I'm starting to think the issue is not AVX2 related at all but something else entirely but I dunno.

  • Kurami, but there is no official statement from them about AVX2, right?

  • I'll explain the picture about avx2, the game doesn't run on avx1 processors, I tested it with a friend personally, and secondly, at one time the discord server was bursting at the seams negative about this, and the minimum system requirements for the game specified processors with avx2 support, so one of the culprits for not starting the game for most users was avx2

  • In my case, there is a memory hang-up somewhere between Battleye updating and Marathon launching. Here is my original forum post for reference.

I have been able to run every single game since 2016 that I met the min system specs for, until this one. The last thing I can think of is that Nvidia hasn't dropped a game-ready legacy driver for the 10 series yet, maybe it'll work when that happens. I know the GTX 1080 is old, but I still think a day one game-ready driver is still deserved. Especially since they did one for Arc Raiders.
