Audio Distortion

Upon launching game, my entire computers sound will get very faint and sound robotic-like.

My friends in discord are all on console and do not have this issue.

I use the Astro A50 wireless headset, whenever I tried launching the game with the headset plugged in my audio went out completely on discord and the game.

  • Yeah, whenever Bluetooth headphones are attempting to be used as both a mic and an audio output device, your headphones will go into a "Hands-Free" mode that turns down the audio quality to make room for the microphone in your headset also being used at the same time. The only problem is, for some reason Marathon just makes it happen by default whenever you want to both listen to your friends on voice and the actual game audio, even if you aren't touching the actual mic on your headset. I'm having a similar issue and have no idea what to do to fix it besides use two different audio outputs at once, one for your audio and one for your voice chat.

  • I'm having the same issue - I use an external mic so I have tried to disable the microphone on my headphones to get around it, but I'm forced to either run with terrible sound quality and good voice chat fidelity, or with voice chat running through external speakers with good sound quality. I haven't found a clever way to force my headphones out of hands-free mode. (Sony WH-1000XM3) Today, I'm going to try to run ambient sounds  on my headphones and voice out of speakers so I can hopefully get both clear enough to play well.

  • Similar issue, but mine did it before I even opened discord. hands free devices are all disabled.

  • My workaround that's working is to plug in my headphones, for those who are still struggling with the hands-free aspect of your headphones.

  • Found this solution on the Steam Community discussion: "Go to device manager > Audio, Video and Gamecontroller > Right click Hands-Free and deactivate. This worked for me."
This worked for me. For my case I had to disable it in two sections [Audio inputs and outputs] AND [Sound, video, and game controllers] after a reboot its no longer sounding like booty.

  • Same with me. No matter what headset I use or setting I disable in windows or the game…nothing makes the tunnel like sound go away. I’m gonna try the above comments suggestion and pray it works 😂

  • And Fotenk, you are 100% correct. Go into PC’s Device Manager while the headset is connected and on…find the headset and disable the headset choice that shows Hands Free. There’s two places to find it so check everywhere…but I disabled it and restarted the game…now it’s sounds great! Sucks that the developers didn’t run into this issue when testing but would be nice for an update to fix it since the Hands Free never affected any of my other games like this.

  • I went into Device Manager to disable and completely uninstall the Hands Free AG on my Rog Cetra wireless earbuds, but it still is changing and distorting my audio. I'm not sure why the game settings don't allow users to change their audio devices. I've disabled all other audio devices and microphones as I use a razer siren mini microphone and this problem seems unresolvable.
