Error Code: BOAR

Players who receive the BOAR error code may be experiencing issues with their network connecting to their console, or issues with downloading or reading updates and patches.

Connection Issues

Wireless vs. Wired Connections Players who use a wireless or Wi-Fi internet connection may experience the BOAR error code more frequently than players using a wired connection. For the best Marathon experience, Bungie recommends players use a wired connection.

View our Network Setup: Wifi vs. Wired Connection article for more information.

Service Issues Marathon requires a constant and stable internet connection to play. Sometimes, internet service providers may interrupt that connection with a service outage, or by blocking a modem from connecting with Marathon due to the bandwidth needed to play.

View our Marathon Internet Connection Requirements article for more information.

Network Status Service outages for platform online services can result in the BOAR error code due to the content failing to load. To determine if there is a service outage, please check the links below:

Other Console Issues

Downloading Updates and Patches If players are having issues downloading console patches or game updates on a wireless connection, players should try using a wired connection instead, since losing connection will stop the download without an option to resume.

If players get into this state, the update should be deleted and restarted by navigating to the console Active Downloads/Download Management window and canceling the download.

External Storage Players may see BOAR when using external storage. Players should ensure that all content has been installed properly, and install any pending updates for Marathon or the console.

View our Installing Marathon Guide for more information on properly installing Destiny content.

Game Sharing Players might be receiving BOAR due to game sharing. Players may need to deactivate a console to stop game sharing if the BOAR error code remains after trying other troubleshooting options.

Players can find out how to stop game sharing by visiting PlayStation Support or Xbox Support.

Xbox Live Players who are seeing the BOAR error code may be having trouble connecting to Xbox Live.

Players should verify that they are signed in to Xbox Live by following the steps below:

  1.
    1. Press the Xbox Button on the controller to open the Xbox Guide.

    2. Navigate to the System menu and select Settings.

    3. From there, go to Network and select Networking Settings. Any known outages will appear in the middle of the screen.

    4. From the Network settings screen, select Test network connection. If the connection test is successful, the console will connect to Xbox Live and the internet.

Note: Players may need to update their console first before they can successfully sign in.

Still Seeing BOAR?

Region Mismatch Players may receive the BOAR error code due to a region mismatch between their account and the Marathon game. To troubleshoot this issue, please follow the steps below:

  1.
    1. Install Marathon.

    2. Before launching the game, create a new account. Ensure that the region of the new account matches the game's region.

    3. Launch Marathon to download any pending updates.

    4. After the updates are downloaded, sign out of the current account and back into the original account.

    5. Launch Marathon.

Two or More Consoles on the Same Network Players may see BOAR if more than two consoles using the same account are trying to connect to Marathon. Players can find out how to activate/deactivate a system by visiting PlayStation Support or Xbox Support.

Reinstall Marathon If players continue to see the BOAR error message, a reinstallation of Marathon may be necessary. View our Installing Marathon Guide for more information on properly installing Marathon content.
