Marathon Alpha Network Indicators

Network Indicators are icons which appear in response to bad network or performance conditions. When network and performance conditions are good, there will be no icons visible.

The icons are displayed in a dedicated area of the HUD in the top right corner. There will be a UI setting to disable them that is not yet implemented for Alpha.

Condition Explanation Impact
Server Disconnect The connection to the server has been interrupted or lost. Actions will not register. The player cannot move. They will be disconnected unless their connection quickly recovers.
Server Framerate The server is experiencing performance problems and is not running at full speed. This is unlikely, but if it does happen, it will cause problems with interactions, ability times, and any timed event.
Client Framerate The client is not able to render frames fast .enough to provide a smooth experience. Critically low client framerate causes the game to run slowly and may result in being kicked back to the lobby with a “rutabaga” error code.
Latency The round-trip time for packets from client to server is too long. Also known as a “bad ping”.

Interactions are delayed, shots may be missed.

  • Warning indicator (white): >80ms
  • Critical indicator (red): >110ms
Investment Disconnect The connection to the player database has been interrupted. No impact while in a game session, as long as the connection recovers. If the connection does not recover, the player may be kicked back to the lobby.
Packet Loss Packets are being lost on the network. Player actions may not register on the server. The player may be warped backwards while moving. Objects may appear to teleport around.
