Game crashes while starting

Game crashes on startup after update 1.1.9.5 Since the latest update 1.1.9.5, I have been unable to launch the game on Steam. When I start the game, BattlEye launches and a black screen appears\. The game then crashes before the Sony logo is displayed. After installing the update, I was initially able to play for about an hour. I then opened the settings menu to adjust some graphics options. After restarting the game, I was no longer able to reach the title screen. I also used NVIDIA’s game optimization feature to automatically configure the best graphics settings for my system. This is when I first encountered the startup issue, although I am not entirely sure whether it is directly related. Since then, I have been unable to launch the game at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

  • I am also experiencing a similar issue. The game will initialize on steam and launch battle eye, then afterwards a black screen will appear as if the game is launching but then the window will close before the game fully launches without any error or notification.

I've tried all the standard troubleshooting methods such as

    Verify game files on steam

    Update windows, graphic drivers bios

    Uninstall/Reinstall game

    Disable steam/discord overlays

  • Hello there,

Thank you very much for reaching out to us. I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues launching the game. If you haven't already, we'd recommend attempting the troubleshooting the other player has attempted. If that fails, to help us further investigate, can you clarify if you receive any error code(s) or messages when crashing? If so, which?

  • Hey OP if you're using an AMD card try rolling back to a previous driver. The most recent AMD driver was causing the issue for me.

    Uninstal/instal
Check the game files with steam

    Update Windows and nvidia drivers

The game did’t show any error code or any message when it crashes.

I start it, a black screen appear and it crashes.

  • Hello again,

Thank you very much for your response and the additional information. To help us even further investigate this, can you provide us with a copy of your DxDiag? You can copy and paste the log over on PasteBin and provide us with the link.

  • Hello,

I wanted to follow up on my previous message and let you know that I managed to resolve the issue.

First of all, thank you for your time and assistance!

The solution was to restore the game’s settings to their factory defaults through the NVIDIA app. After doing so, Marathon launched successfully again.

For context, the issue started after I used NVIDIA’s automatic game optimization to improve my FPS. The game had been running normally for about an hour after the latest update, but after applying the optimization, it would consistently launch to a black screen for approximately 10 seconds before crashing, without displaying any error message or code.

I had already tried reinstalling the game, verifying the game files through Steam, updating Windows and my NVIDIA drivers, clearing the shader cache, and deleting the game’s configuration files from AppData, but none of these steps resolved the issue.

Restoring the game’s settings to their factory defaults through the NVIDIA app was the step that finally allowed me to launch the game again.

I cannot say for certain which specific setting caused the crash, but I thought this information might be useful in identifying a potential compatibility issue between Marathon and NVIDIA’s game optimization settings.

If further investigation is needed, I would be happy to provide additional information, perform tests, or help your team!

Thank you again for your assistance, and I hope this information can help prevent other players from experiencing the same problem

Love you Bungie and all ❤️
