Game crash/freez mid game
Since about two days I experience the same error.
My specs:
- AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 8-Core Processor
- MSI Tomahawk WIFI B650
- 64 GB RAM
- Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB
- RTX 5070 Ti
I start a round and a few minutes in the run, the game just freezes. I get no error message, nothing. It's just frozen. Even after 4-5 minutes it's still frozen and I get/got no error.
Everything has the newest driver and every other game runs smooth. I checked for corrupted files, but again. No missing files, no corrupted files. It just freezes out of nowhere.
So if anyone had or has the same issue and a fix, please let me know. Thanks.

Hi there,
Thanks for the report! Rest assured that crashes are automatically reported to us when they occur. In the meantime, we recommend keeping your GPU drivers and Windows version fully updated.
Since you experience this often, please try re-installing the game using the steps in our guide below:
https://help.marathonthegame.com/hc/en-us/articles/39001262917908-Installing-Reinstalling-and-Updating-Marathon
Please also note that the game is not officially supported on laptop devices, even if those devices otherwise meet the minimum requirements.
If you had read my specs you would know I'm not playing on a laptop, so I guess thats just a automated AI response.
Literally everything is updated. My GPU, CPU, BIOS, Windows all other Drivers. And I didn't Updated them and then the Crashes happened. They just happen now everytime I try to play the game and they never occurred before that 2-3 days ago.
I reset my Drivers, I reinstalled them. I deinstalled the game, cleared the steam-, dx-, shader-cache. I have hwinfo and MSI afterburner running on my second screen to see if there are any anomalies, but nothing. From one second to the other the game freezes and shuts down without giving an error message. So I don't even have a clue what causes it to freeze and shutdown, so I could look up for a fix or fix it myself.
Every other program or game is running flawlessly on my system, just not Marathon. I like this game, but its just unplayable for me right now.
Does only the game freeze or your whole PC? I have both GPU time out issues and full system lock ups. I'm trying to figure out these issues since a month. As of now these issues happen for me in Marathon since Season 2 and in Destiny 2 which i recently installed. So it may be connected to the engine of the games since they use the same one.
Only the game freeze, that what makes it so weird.
I tested it today (again) and had COD running on the second screen, I started a solo run in Marathon and after a few minutes same issue, the game froze for about 10 seconds, then just ended itself. Meanwhile COD was still running without an issue.
Then tried it again without COD or any control tool running and the same happened.
It’s just annoyed to not even have an error message to work with.
Also for some reason, when I’m just in the menu of Marathon, nothing happens. No freeze, no stutter, no lags for half a hour. But as soon as I start a run, after a few minutes the game freezes.
From what it looks like, it’s what you’re describing. That’s a GPU time out issue.
When I let the MSI Afterburner control panel, hwinfo or even the task manager running, they all show the same.
The game runs, my GPU is at 65-75% load and then from one second to the other drops to 0% load and my CPU as well, but it’s still fully loaded in the RAM and the RAM continues to work.
I’m a software developer myself, worked on a few games and game engines before (not professionally or at a game the size like marathon) and yeah it’s different than a full time game developer.
But I have absolutely no clue how this can even happen. Like there has to be some f/up in the code that causes a issue like this.
I have noticed a behavior in Marathon than is very unusual and maybe of concern for the Bungie Support team.

I am currently using a AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D (similar to yours). The CPU has two Core Complex Dies. CCD 0 (3D cache) for gaming and CCD 1 for any other background processes or workstation tasks.
Every game I play is using the Gaming CCD properly. The only exception is Marathon which is always mainly using CCD1 for some reason.
I have experienced freezes and crashes in Marathon and recently also in Destiny 2. I suspect that it may be due to these games sharing the same engine.
I am sharing some examples here:
maybe you could let me know if you have similar readings
It's possible that another application is interacting with the game and causing the freezes. We recommend closing all other possible applications before launching the game to try and isolate which application may be causing the problem.
