XeSS Frame Gen possibly turning itself off after a fight

  • Bungie Account Name: Covidiu#8867

    Platform: Steam

    System:

    • CPU: Ryzen 5 3550H

    • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650 4 GB

    • OS: Fresh installation of Windows 10 LTSC 2021

Issue 1 - XeSS Frame Generation is not persistent between matches

XeSS Frame Generation does not remain enabled between matches. I must re-enable it after loading into each new match. It does show in the settings it is enabled but in reality it is not.

Issue 2 - XeSS Frame Generation performance degradation

After loading into a match and enabling XeSS Frame Generation, performance initially behaves correctly.

    Example (Perimeter):

    • ~97 FPS

    • ~90-97% GPU utilization

    • VRAM usage ~3.8 GB

After approximately 5-10 minutes of gameplay, or after engaging in either PvE or PvP combat, performance degrades significantly without changing any settings:

    • FPS drops from ~97 to ~50-60

    • GPU utilization drops from ~90-97% to ~50-60%

    • VRAM usage remains approximately unchanged (~3.9 GB)

The performance loss persists even after combat ends.

If I disable and immediately re-enable XeSS Frame Generation in the exact same location where the FPS drop occurred:

    • FPS immediately returns to ~90-97

    • GPU utilization immediately returns to ~90%

    • No other settings are changed

After re-enabling XeSS Frame Generation, performance remains stable for the remainder of the match.

    Reproduction Steps

    1. Launch Marathon.

    2. Load into any match.

    3. Enable XeSS Frame Generation after loading.

    4. Play normally for approximately 5-10 minutes or engage in PvE/PvP combat.

    5. Observe FPS and GPU utilization decrease significantly.

    6. Disable and re-enable XeSS Frame Generation.

    7. Observe immediate restoration of FPS and GPU utilization in the same location.

    Additional Notes

    • Issue occurs on multiple maps and queue types.

    • Issue occurs in PvE-only situations as well as PvP encounters.

    • Attached screenshots show performance before degradation and after re-enabling XeSS Frame Generation.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for reaching out.

While it may be possible to play on certain laptop configurations, we do not officially support them per our Marathon Storage and System Requirements guide.

Because this is an unsupported platform, we’re only able to suggest basic troubleshooting steps here and can’t provide more advanced troubleshooting.

That being said, here are some steps to try:

    • Update your GPU drivers to the latest version from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
    • Make sure the game is using the laptop’s dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
    • Set Windows and your GPU control panel to High Performance mode for Marathon.
    • Disable overlays and background tools such as Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and similar software.
    • Remove any overclock, undervolt, or third-party performance tuning settings and test again at default settings.
    • Fully restart the PC after driver updates, reinstalling, or verifying files.
    • Make sure Windows is fully updated.
  • I hope you understand this is not a hardware issue with my laptop at all, as many other player reports with different specs reported the exact same thing. It is a bug with the Intel XeSS FG. The latest drivers are installed. The game is using the dedicated GPU. Every other type of overlay is deactivated. The key thing is that performance and GPU util. are restored the moment I toggle the frame gen off and on again mid-match.
