Mic doesnt work in game

  • The Issue: I am experiencing a complete failure of in-game voice chat in Marathon. My microphone does not broadcast to the lobby, and I cannot hear any other players VOIPing. Game audio itself works fine, but the communications layer is completely dead.

I am using a complex virtual audio routing setup through SteelSeries Sonar to separate my Discord comms from my stream/game comms, but Marathon seems to be completely ignoring or failing to hook into the virtual audio cables, despite them being explicitly selected in the game menus.

    Hardware & Software:

    • Headset: SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless (with USB Base Station)

    • Software: SteelSeries GG (Sonar enabled, Streamer Mode active)

    • OS: Windows 10/11

My Audio Routing Goal: I use Sonar's Streamer Mode to mix my physical mic with background music. I output this mix to a virtual cable (SteelSeries Sonar - Stream) to use as my in-game mic. I keep my Discord routed directly to the physical headset endpoints (Arctis Pro Wireless Chat) so my friends don't hear the music, and so my physical ChatMix wheel still works.

Troubleshooting Steps I Have Already Tried:

    1. In-Game Audio Settings Configured:

    • Voice Chat Input Device set to: SteelSeries Sonar - Stream

    • Voice Audio Output Device set to: SteelSeries Sonar - Gaming (Note: Initially the game defaulted to "Steam Streaming Microphone", but manually changing it to Sonar did not fix the issue).

    2. Windows Audio & Privacy Settings Checked:

    • Set SteelSeries Sonar - Gaming as both Default Device and Default Communications Device for Playback.

    • Set SteelSeries Sonar - Stream as both Default Device and Default Communications Device for Recording.

    • Disabled "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" for both my physical Arctis microphone and the Sonar virtual cables.

    • Confirmed Windows Microphone Privacy settings are ON and allowing desktop apps to access the mic.

    3. Steam Override Checked:

    • Went into Steam Settings > Voice and ensured the default Voice Input Device was forced to SteelSeries Sonar - Stream.

    4. Sonar Software Confirmed Working:

    • The mic meter in Sonar actively bounces when I speak. Sonar is definitely receiving my raw mic input.

    • Marathon is properly assigned to the "Game" column in the Sonar App Routing mixer.

    5. In-Game Workarounds Attempted:

    • Toggled Crew Chat and Proximity Chat Off, applied settings, and toggled them back On.

    • Power-cycled the Arctis headset while loaded into a match to force a device re-poll.

Summary: My virtual mic (Sonar - Stream) works perfectly in other applications, but Marathon refuses to transmit my voice or play other players' voices through the selected Output device. Has anyone found a workaround for virtual audio cables failing specifically in this game, or is the VOIP engine currently bugged when not using raw hardware inputs?
